Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

We believe that learning a foreign language provides a vital opening to other cultures. While formal language teaching begins at Northmead, the foundation of being part of a worldwide community starts in Early Years.

At Northmead, our French curriculum is designed to equip children with the confidence to begin to communicate in another language, providing them with the skills to express their ideas and thoughts in French and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

Learning French at Northmead is an active, engaging experience. We understand that children learn best when they are enjoying themselves, which is why our curriculum is built on high-engagement activities:

  • Games and Songs: The children enjoy playing games and singing in French. Each year group learns songs based on their specific topics, ensuring that vocabulary is embedded through rhythm and play.
  • Real-Life Contexts: From our Year 5 French Café to exploring familiar stories like La Chenille qui Fait des Trous (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), we provide real-world opportunities for children to see and hear French in action.

Core Pillars of our MFL Curriculum

Pillar

Our Approach

Oracy & Phonics

We place an emphasis on speaking and listening. Children begin with thematic vocabulary (animals, colours, the body) and quickly move to using these in short, spoken sentences.

Sentence Structure

We teach the building blocks of grammar early on. By learning simple sentence structures that apply to different topics, children gain the independence to create their own phrases.

Reading & Writing

As children progress, they are encouraged to extend their sentences and use dictionaries to broaden their vocabulary, moving from single words to more complex written compositions.

Cultural Appreciation

Language is the gateway to culture. We explore French traditions and lifestyle, ensuring children leave us with an enthusiasm to continue their learning.
