Geography
At our schools, we believe that Geography is the key to understanding our place in the world. We wish every child to develop a lifelong curiosity, fascination, and appreciation for the planet and its people.
We aim to equip pupils with a diverse knowledge of places, people, resources, and both natural and human environments. By linking our local surroundings in Guildford to the wider world, we help children understand the relationship between the physical world and the human societies that inhabit it.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build geographical fluency as children move from the Infant to the Junior phase:
- In the Early Years and Key Stage 1 (Stoughton): The focus is on the primary sources right on our doorstep. Children begin their journey through first-hand experiences, observing and investigating the local environment, from our own Forest School area to the local shops, churches, and the nearby river.
- In Key Stage 2 (Northmead): Building on these foundations, children expand their horizons. They learn to use sophisticated geographical terminology and explore how physical and human geography have changed over time. We challenge pupils to explain how the physical world shapes human life, preparing them to leave us as well-informed global citizens.
Core Pillars of our Geography Curriculum
Theme | Our Approach |
Locational Knowledge | From identifying the four countries of the UK to naming and locating the world’s continents and oceans, and later, focusing on environmental regions and key physical/human characteristics. |
Place Knowledge | Comparing our local life in Surrey with diverse communities around the world, understanding the similarities and differences in how people live. |
Human & Physical Geography | Investigating natural wonders (weather, volcanoes, rivers) and human impacts (settlements, land use, and the distribution of natural resources). |
Fieldwork & Skills | Using maps, atlases, globes, and digital mapping to locate places. We place a heavy emphasis on fieldwork, using our local area to practise sketching, data collection, and observation.
