Music Progression Map
Music
At our schools, we believe that Music is a universal language that should engage and inspire every child. Our vision is to provide a great music education that nurtures talent, builds confidence and develops love of music.
From the first rhymes in Nursery to learning the Ukulele in Year 6, we provide a continuous journey of musical discovery. Using the Charanga Musical School scheme, we ensure children are exposed to a rich variety of genres and traditions.
- In the Infant Phase (Stoughton): The journey begins with exploration. Children in Nursery develop their ear through songs and rhymes, while children from Reception to Year 2 use Charanga to listen, respond, and create. They begin to use percussion instruments to understand rhythm and pulse, building the foundations of performance.
- In the Junior Phase (Northmead): Musical skills are deepened through a Charanga curriculum. Children transition from appraising music to active composition and performance. Children learn a different musical instrument each year, starting with the record, then the keyboard, the clarinet and finally the ukulele. There are also opportunities to take part in large scale orchestral events.
Core Pillars of our Music Curriculum
Pillar | Our Approach |
Listening & Appraising | Children explore a vast range of musical styles from classical and jazz to contemporary pop. They learn to identify instruments and express their opinions on what they hear. |
Singing & Performance | Singing is at the heart of our music curriculum. Whether in the classroom or as part of a choir, children learn to use their voices expressively and perform with confidence. |
Composing & Improvising | Using both acoustic instruments and digital resources, children are encouraged to explore their own musical ideas, creating and recording their own compositions. |
The Language of Music | We introduce musical notation and terminology progressively, ensuring children understand the building blocks of music such as pitch, duration, dynamics, and tempo. |
