PSHE Progression Map

PSHE

At our schools, PSHE education is at the heart of our ethos. We want to ensure every child is fully prepared to lead a happy, healthy, and successful life both now and in the future. We believe that a high-quality PSHE curriculum does more than just teach facts; it develops the positive attributes, resilience, and empathy needed to flourish as individuals within a diverse community.

From the first steps into Nursery to the transition to Secondary school, we provide a safe environment where children can explore real-life situations, understand their own emotions, and develop a deep respect for the world around them.

Our curriculum follows the PSHE Association Programme of Study, ensuring a seamless spiral approach where key themes are revisited and deepened as children grow. We use high-quality resources such as 1Decision to provide age-appropriate, engaging lessons.

The curriculum is built upon three core themes, each given equal weighting:

  1. Health and Wellbeing: Understanding physical and mental health, from healthy eating and road safety to managing emotions and online habits.
  2. Relationships: Learning what a good friend looks like, how to resolve conflict, and understanding that relationships can be different and appropriate in various contexts.
  3. Living in the Wider World: Exploring our role in the community, the value of money, the law of the land, and the appreciation of diverse cultures.

Core Pillars of our PSHE Curriculum

Pillar

Our Approach

Collaborative Learning

We believe PSHE is best learned through talk and shared experiences. Learning is captured in whole class record books, showcasing the collective voice and reflection of all children.

SMSC Development

Our curriculum is underpinned by Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural development. We foster reflection, teach the difference between right and wrong, and celebrate the cultural influences that shape our lives.

Themed Assemblies

In assemblies provide a space for school-wide reflection. Through stories, songs, and acting, children strive to embody what it means to be a member of our school community and how we can live and breathe our school values of ambition, bravery and compassion.

Tailored Education

Our curriculum is adaptable. Whether it is responding to a current safeguarding need or inviting visitors like the police or health professionals, we tailor our teaching to the specific needs of our families.

Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)

Sex education is taught sensitively and is primarily focused on in Year 4 and Year 6 although children learn about healthy relationships and families from the Early Years.  We believe in transparency and partnership; parents are always kept informed about the content and context of these lessons. Using age-appropriate resources from ‘Living and Growing’ and Amaze, we ensure that discussions are handled with care and confidence.
